Lifeguard

Minimum age is 15 in most areas. Anne Arundel County, Prince George's County and the City of Alexandria minimum age is 16. You must successfully complete the Continental Pools Lifeguard Training Program. At the beginning of the course, you will have to pass a qualifying swim test consisting of swimming 100 yards without stopping, surface dive feet first to the bottom of the pool (between 8 and 13 feet deep) and bring a 10 pound weight to the surface and tread water for 1 minute without using your hands. Successful completion of the course is determined by passing the simulated aquatic emergency scenario and passing a written exam. Upon successful completion of the course, lifeguards are required, for the time period they are working, to complete at least 4 hours of in-service training per month and hold themselves accountable to all the standards of lifeguarding that are taught in the course.

Pool Operator

Minimum age is 16 everywhere except in Montgomery County, where you must be 17. No prior experience is necessary except in Montgomery County, where you must have at least 520 hours as a lifeguard. All jurisdictions require a certificate of successful completion of an approved pool operator’s course. Our course is approved by the state of Maryland and follows the NSPF CPO guidelines. Once the course is completed, lifeguards must go to the health department in the county where they work and pay for the license.
