Exploration Series

The Exploration course is the first program designed for children under the age of 3 that includes water safety education as its core focus. The parent/care giver is taught how to prevent and manage an aquatic emergency in addition to basic CPR skills. The Exploration water skills will give the parent a wide variety of activities to use to safely enjoy the water with their child while developing a strong base of aquatic skills. All skills are introduced only when a child is developmentally ready.

It is important to remember that the Exploration Series will not make children water-safe. Remember that no individual is water safe, regardless of past swimming instruction.

The Exploration Series is designed to teach the CPR component to parents / caregivers even if the instructor is not a certified CPR instructor. The CPR portion of the Exploration Program is not a CPR course, but rather general instruction in CPR techniques designed to help a parent provide care in the event of an aquatic emergency. There are no exams given; however, if the instructor is a certified CPR instructor, a full course can be included to provide certification.

Objectives
  • Provide a standard for measuring supervision of young children around water to prevent drowning.

  • Provide information of how to perform rescue breathing / CPR and handle aquatic emergencies.

  • Provide a wide variety of water activities allowing parents to explore the water in an enjoyable and safe manner with their children.

  • Provide guidelines for developing correct body position and movement skills.

Materials

Each parent/care giver will receive a Parent Handbook. This handbook is designed to be user-friendly and practical.

Instructors

Due to the nature of the Exploration course and the high level of interaction the instructor will have with the parents, the minimum age requirements for an Exploration instructor is 19. Additional requirements include experience with infants and toddlers and current CPR certification.

Class Size & Age Range

With one instructor, the maximum class size will be 12 parents/care givers plus children between the ages of 6 months and 36 months. The course is geared toward the adults, who in turn work one on one with the child. The Exploration program is designed to be taught in a group situation with all ages together. This way parents are exposed to the full range of what can be expected as their child grows older.
